Long term effect of British colonialism in Malaysia that have lasted till today

There are several long-term effects of british colonialism in malaysia that have lasted till today, but perhaps the greatest is the system of law that has remained.
Malaysia has retained a stable government, and has remained a democracy, so those are two things that could be seen as long term and lasting effects that British colonialism has had. Malaysia also benefited from colonialism by being able to produce goods for Great Britain, and so their manufacturing industry is something that has largely derived from this era of colonialism. Whilst of course it could be argued that colonialism was wrong, it is without doubt that it has had some benefit on the country and has allowed them to remain an active force of the world's economy.
Even in today’s complex society, the effects of past colonization can still be felt. The most obvious of these effects on society is a change in the culture of any colonized area or group of people. This is a direct result from the forceful tactics used during historical colonization.
The effects of British colonization in Malaysia that still last to this day are:
  1. Integrated races
  2. Divided and controlled
  3. Depletion of natural resources
  4. Accelerated development
  5. Technology
  6. Provided functional system for independence

There were both bad and good effects to the British colonization of Malaysia. This link opendebate.wordpress.com/2008/10/13/what-has-colonialism-don has a really good article on some of the bad and good traits of colonization.

It started off with the bad; listing such things as integrated races, the divide and control system and depletion of natural resources. Bringing in different races such as Indian and Chinese was not in itself bad, but what it allowed the British to do was.

With different races the British set up specific economical activities for each race. For example the Indian and Chinese population worked in the plantation and mining industry respectively. It led to the "divide and control system" in which true racial integration was impossible. It instead created racial segregation that hinders a true marriage of integration today.

There was also a depletion of natural resources because the British took the resources and exported them out of the country leaving very little behind. Despite the negative effects of the exporting options it is also one of the things that has strengthened the country. It provided a chance for accelerated development of the country.

Colonization also helped bring in technology like railway, television and much more. Those who debated this very question felt without colonization Malaysia would probably be a hundred years behind where they are now.

Overall, they felt that colonization provided a functional system for independence that allowed their country to finally remove colonization and become an independent place with state administration and management of the economy that is functioning at its best. There are still areas for reform, but the impacts of colonization mentioned above still remain today.

SOME OF THE GOOD ASPECTS:

Better Education System
1.       Introduced English Education System, a Cambridge System recognized for its quality.
  1. Better education system compare to Malay education system, up to primary school only.
  2. opportunities to pursue tertiary education

Flourish Malaysia Economy
  1. open large rubber estates, oil palm estates, tin mines and large scale industrial establishments
  2. Improved infrastructures & facilities i.e.
  3. good roads, modern towns, schools, & economic prosperity.
The Bad Aspects:-
  1. The British EXPLOITED Malaysian natural resources to fuel and sustain the empire in light of the Industrial Revolution.
  2. The British DISRUPTED racial relations and institutionalized racial ideology
British built divisive race relationship?
1.For providing labor forces to new emerging industry, rubber plantation and tin mining in late 19th century, it was necessary to have many migrants from China and India!
2.By injecting abundant of labor forces, the British could achieved rapid economic growth in Malaya.
Government Structure
1.       British gave an opportunity to learn English to Malays.
2.       Malays could hold higher bureaucratic and political positions.
3.       British reinforced the principle of Malay dominance in government.

When the communist insurgency occurred, British prepared future security arrangements because Malaya didn’t have any security mechanism at that time.
This security arrangements have been maintained in Malaysia until today.
